In order to solve the communication problems in Istanbul during and after a possible earthquake, an online earthquake Hackathon competition was held between 28-31 May 2020 with the contribution of IMM, Turkey Informatics Foundation, Başlangıç Noktası, ITU Artificial Intelligence Center, Zemin Istanbul and Kodluyoruz.
The earthquake Hackathon online event, which competes with those who want to solve post-earthquake communication problems with data-driven and innovative ideas, started with a meeting on the digital platform in the morning hours on 28th of May. The opening speech of the meeting was made by Dr. Naim Erol Özgüner wished that the solutions that will be put forward by the projects that will be revealed by the teams would be effective in people’s lives. At the opening meeting of the Hackathon jury members, Faruk Eczacıbaşı, President of Informatics Foundation of Turkey, head of Earthquake Risk Management and Urban Improvement Department of IMM, Dr. Tayfun Kahraman, head of Information Processing Department of IMM Erol Özgüner, ITU faculty member, Assoc. Dr. Altan Cakir also spoke briefly about his thoughts on the contest.
Solutions to possible communication problems during and after the earthquake were targeted
The projects developed in the competition aimed to produce solutions for communication problems between victims, their relatives and rescue teams during and after a possible earthquake. The selected teams spent 84 hours trying to develop innovative solutions using new technologies such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, big data, blockchain, the Internet of Things. The teams had a chance to develop their projects by receiving mentorship from experts from different disciplines and fields during the hackathon.

During the evening hours of the first day of the competition, The Organizing Committee met with the contestants again on the online platform. The committee was chaired by Ekrem Imamoglu, the Mayor of the İstanbul, and Erol Özgüner, the head of the Department of Information Processing, gave speeches to the contestants.

IMM President Ekrem Imamoğlu met with the teams to compete for 4 days and he said ” We are ready. Istanbul is yours; all of us. We’ll produce it together. We’ll solve problems together. I found incredible morale and I was incredibly hopeful.”
Imamoğlu pointed out that the issue of Hackathon is very critical and underlined the need for ideas that contain solutions after the earthquake. Imamoğlu emphasizing that, in this context, the most important issue is the communication of people who exposed to the earthquake. He said “In this sense a hackhaton is held. I already have a feeling there will be some really valuable results. I wish you all success.”

After the speakers, the speakers of the participating teams (Afelyon, Blocklearners, Crawlers, CO-1, DEHA (Earthquake Life Network), Faydos, AY-TI, Netcad Innovation Labs, Janus, Soundquake, Ravens and Veri Terbiyecileri) introduced their projects.
The teams made use of the datasets in the IMM Open Data Portal
12 teams working non-stop to develop projects that would be beneficial for the society, continued to mature their projects by using various disaster-related data sets presented to the contestants via The Open Data Portal of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality in order to produce ideas that would eliminate the communication problem after the earthquake.

The first 3 from among the teams maturing their projects for 4 days by meeting with many experts in the field of disaster one-on-one, were determined as a result of the evaluation of the jury.
